on romney's side the answer is flatly now. if you look at the policies which he did not want to get into on wednesday night, they are not centrist in any way. we had in the clip saying pre-existing conditions are covered under the plan. of course you want to say that. that's a centrist-sounding thing. are they covered under romney's plan? no. he says i'm not offering a tax cut to the wealthy. is that actually true? no. his plan actually would dramatically decrease the tax burden on the wealthy in this country. now, contrast that with obama. contrast that with how he has governed. if he sounds like a centrist in the debate, has he governed more as a centrist. look at health care. he took the individual mandate, a republican idea and proposed a plan and implemented a plan friendly to the private insurance industry. wall street reform. liberals say he didn't go far enough. he mentioned social security. he was willing to cut a grand bargain with republicans last year on social security and medicare. the key point is this, i think.
